US citizens do not need a visa to visit Costa Rica as tourists. You need a passport that is valid for your whole stay, proof that you are leaving (a return or onward ticket), and the ability to show you can support yourself during the trip. The immigration officer at the airport decides how long you may stay, and for US citizens that can be up to 180 days.

Quick answers

  • Visa: not required for stays of less than 180 days, according to the US Department of State.
  • Passport: must be valid for the period of your stay. Check the date before you book, and renew early if it is close.
  • Return or onward ticket: required. Bring proof of a flight, bus or cruise that takes you out of the country.
  • Proof of funds: the Costa Rica Tourism Board says visitors must show at least USD 100 per month of stay, or per partial month.
  • Length of stay: set by the officer at entry. Up to 180 days is possible for US citizens, but it is not guaranteed.
  • Yellow fever certificate: only if you arrive from certain countries in South America or Africa.
  • Cash: the State Department lists a limit of USD 10,000 on entry and on exit.

Passport

Costa Rica asks for a passport valid for the period of your stay, and the State Department says an officer can refuse a passport that is damaged. Costa Rica has changed its rules on passport validity before, and we could not confirm the exact current wording, so do not fly with a passport that is close to expiring. Make sure it is valid well past your return date, and check with your airline and the Costa Rican immigration authority (Migración, at migracion.go.cr) if yours is close to the limit.

Return or onward ticket

Everyone needs proof of a way out of Costa Rica. The Costa Rica Tourism Board lists these cases where it matters most for non-residents:

  • You arrive on a one-way ticket.
  • Your return ticket is dated more than 90 days after your arrival.
  • You fly into Costa Rica but leave from a different country.

Accepted proof includes a flight out, a pre-purchased bus ticket out of the country, or a cruise ship booking. Keep it where you can show it quickly, on your phone and printed.

Proof of funds

The Costa Rica Tourism Board says you must be able to show at least USD 100 for each month of stay, or each partial month. The page does not say how often officers check, so plan to be able to show it. For a 10-day trip that is one partial month, so USD 100.

How long you can stay

The immigration officer sets your maximum stay at the border and writes it on your entry stamp or record. The Costa Rica Tourism Board says the first group of visitors can receive up to 180 calendar days, and that this stay cannot be extended. The State Department says authorities may allow US citizens up to 180 days, but that this is not guaranteed. Ask for what you need, and look at the stamp before you leave the counter.

The stay on your stamp matters beyond immigration. Your US driver’s license is valid for the tourist stay shown on your passport entry stamp, and police check the entry date. Read our guide to driving in Costa Rica before you rent a car.

Health rules

The State Department says proof of yellow fever vaccination is required if you arrive from certain countries in South America or Africa. If you are flying directly from the United States, this usually does not apply. If your trip includes a stop or a stay in one of those regions, check with the airline and a travel clinic first. For other vaccines and mosquito-borne illness, see our packing list and the CDC travelers’ health page for Costa Rica.

Before you fly: a short checklist

  1. Check that your passport is valid for your whole stay and in good condition.
  2. Have proof of a flight, bus or cruise out of Costa Rica, and keep a copy offline.
  3. Be ready to show funds of at least USD 100 per month of stay.
  4. Keep your hotel and rental car confirmations handy. See the rental car insurance guide for what to bring to the counter.
  5. Check the dates on this guide and on the official pages below, because entry rules change.
